Back to School with Essential Oils!

From: Jenn Dougherty, Certified Essential Oil Coach- Natural Advantage Wellness

I stopped in to pick up some things at our Conifer Staples on June 20th the first official day of summer! Guess what they were doing …putting out the school supplies! My heart sank. Ugh! Summer goes by so fast doesn’t it? Whether you send your kids to school, homeschool, or go to school yourself, there are several different essential oils that can help transition from lazy summer days back to early mornings, rigid schedules, and homework. In the hustle and bustle of back to school shopping you can also take the time to prepare your child’s body for school.

Here are my Top 5 favorites for back to school:

  1. Protective Blend (On Guard) –Before school even begins support your immune systems with this amazing blend that smells like Autumn! This blend of oils includes Cinnamon, Clove and Wild Orange, rosemary, and eucalyptus. Diffuse, use the hand sanitizer spray, or utilize the beadlets or throat drops – make it part of every day! You can even put 1-2 drops in a bowl of water and soak apple slices in it for a healthy immune boosting snack -Yum!
  2. Focus Blend (In-Tune) – Designed to enhance the body’s ability to focus and support healthy thought processes. This blend can help children, parents, or the teachers focus and stay on task. Many oils in this blend contain high levels of sesquiterpenes, which have been proven to pass the blood-brain barrier to reach the cells of the brain. I’ve been known to apply this blend to the back of my children’s neck as they are eating breakfast. You can also apply to the bottom of the feet morning and/or night and whenever needed throughout the day.
  3. Rosemary – Rosemary is wonderful to support the brain in retaining information. In fact, it’s being used in memory care facilities for Alzheimer’s/Dementia patients. Rosemary is known to improve brain performance and mood. I recommend diffusing this oil when the kids are studying or doing homework. Reluctant kiddos? Add a drop or two to your child’s shampoo!
  4. Lemon – Lemon is known as “The Oil of Focus “. Its citrusy aroma nourishes the mind and aids in concentration. Lemon is a wonderful aid for children who are struggling with school. It pairs well with Rosemary! So, you can make a roller bottle with Rosemary and Lemon and apply to the wrists, back of the neck, or diffuse this powerful duo before school.
  5. Citrus Bliss – Especially great for waking up in the morning, mood lifting, energizing and just general happiness. If you have a cranky morning kiddo this is the oil for you! Diffuse or mix with water for a room spray (only mix in glass not plastic) or just smell from the bottle. Citrus blend smells like a creamsicle – everyone likes creamsicles! Sometimes when my family likes to complain about me and my oils I just put it on myself and go stand next to them. 😉

A note on quality: I only use and recommend pure therapeutic-grade essential oils. The suggestions above assume that high-quality essential oils are being used. Personally, I am a doTERRA user, but there are other high-quality oil brands out there. Be sure to do your homework and don’t assume if you are buying them from a health food store they are high quality-most are not!

dōTERRA Essential Oil Chemistry Handbook

Essential Oils are JUST CHEMISTRY! Chemistry can be a bit intimidating but this information from the doTerra science blog breaks it down for the everyday user!

eBook link: doTERRA Essential Oil Chemistry Handbook

Everything is chemistry. Every cell, organ, and tissue in the body performs its function using enzymes, receptors, and other proteins, which work together to break down, build up, and rearrange the chemical bonds in biological molecules. Essential oils also operate under the principles of chemistry. In fact, the chemical makeup of essential oils is what gives them the ability to affect the body’s systems.

The doTERRA Oil Chemistry Handbook is a reference that will give you the information and the intellectual tools you need in order to understand how to use essential oils effectively based on their chemical properties. By understanding the fundamentals of oil chemistry, you can begin to classify oils by their chemical properties. This will help you learn which oils might have applications in different daily life contexts and how they work.

The book is currently arranged into three parts:

  • Part 1 contains generalizations based on chemistry to help develop a conceptual framework for grouping and categorizing oils. The content in Part 1 provides background information on essential oils and the basics of general and organic chemistry.
  • Part 2 contains the most detailed chemical information publicly available on each of doTERRA’s single oils. The percent composition of each oil by constituent, carbon backbone type, and functional group is given using data from doTERRA’s analytical chemistry laboratory.
  • Part 3 presents the chemical properties of around 80 of the main chemical constituents found in doTERRA oils. The name, structure, chemical classification, uses, and benefits of each isolated compound are listed along with the oils in which these compounds can be found, and in what percent composition. This section is designed to serve as an expansion of the constituent details provided in the doTERRA Oil Chemistry Wheel

We hope that you will enjoy having this valuable information at your fingertips as you browse this reference on essential oil chemistry.

10 Natural Remedies to help you through the cold and flu season.

1. Wash Your Hands Frequently and Thoroughly

This is the number one way to prevent the flu and other respiratory infections. Scrub your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds in order to kill viruses. Twenty seconds is about how long it takes to sing the ABC’s one time through. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth without first washing your hands.

2. Good Gut Health / Probiotics

Your gut is your gateway to health, 80% of your immune system is located in your gut. Make sure your gut is in tip-top shape, and take a high-quality, multi strain probiotic. Probiotics are micro-organisms, specific bacteria, fungi, and yeasts that are natural, necessary component of the digestive tract. When the biodiversity of these beneficial organisms is in balance, they help with digestion, nutrient absorption, and form the front line of our immune defense. I like doTERRAs PB Assist Jr. for my kids and sometimes I just take a double dose of it. However, doTERRA’s PB Assist (for adults) is great too. It has a unique double encapsulation system to ensure the probiotic makes it way down into the intestines where it is needed rather than being absorbed in the stomach. Keeping your levels of good gut bacteria up will help you fight off infections.

3. Reduce Your Stress and Get 7-9 Hours of Sleep Every Night

Stress is known to suppress our immune systems. Consider meditation, yoga, or acupuncture. Your body relies on sleep to recuperate from daily exposure to toxins. Chronic sleep deprivation can significantly reduce immune function.

4. Lots of Fluids and Teas

This one is pretty instinctive, but we load up on herbal teas and hot ACV water with honey at first sign of illness. The heat helps boost immune system and a variety of herbs can help with infection.

5. Eldelberry Syrup

Eldelberry or its botanical name Sambucus, is a unique American fruit that can boost the immune system and help treat conjunctivitis, cold and flu symptoms, reduce congestion, and is also used for detoxification. You can typically find it in the pharmacy section of your grocery store or natural foods market – my family uses Nature’s Way.

6. Essential Oil Immune Bomb

Here is a widely used EO remedy with a choice of 2 methods of application.

7. Detox Baths

Taking a detox bath will help clean your system of toxins, and absorb wonderful minerals that will strengthen the immune systems. I like to use Epsom Salts and a few drops of any essential oils of my choosing depending on symptoms.  i.e. “Breathe” for congestion or “Lemongrass” for sore muscles.

8.  Supplement with Glutathione, Turmeric, Vitamin C and Vitamin D

Antioxidants are very important for your immune function. Glutathione is the chief antioxidant in your body, responsible for enhancing your immune system and helping your liver with detoxification. Curcumin is the orange pigment in turmeric and a potent antioxidant that improves joint health and cardiovascular function.Vitamin C provides potent antioxidant protection, and supports optimal immune function. Vitamin D is a powerful immune system modulator meaning it is key to fighting off infections and regulating autoimmunity. You will also want to be sure that your vitamin D supplement is paired with vitamin K to ensure that it is safely absorbed and doesn’t lead to artery calcifications.

9.  Garlic, Ginger,  and Raw Honey

Garlic-A natural antifungal and antibacterial that can help kick almost any illness to the curb. It is also a natural antibiotic. Garlic loses its potency when cooked, so it’s best taken raw during times of sickness. A potent anti-viral substance that prevents the adhesion of viruses to the upper respiratory mucosa. Ginger is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and also an antioxidant. Ginger also soothes the stomach and throat, has properties to suppress a cough, and is considered a natural pain and fever reducer. Another immune system booster that also helps the body fight a cold or flu faster. Honey-Did you know studies have determined that children who get a dose of raw honey cough less and sleep better than those who get cough and cold medicines? Plus there are no side effects. We like Zarbee’s honey remedies. Make sure you choose a good quality raw honey like 100% Pure Raw Tupelo Honey -or a pure honey local to you is best.

10.  Exercise

Exercise can boost your immune system by increasing your circulation and relieving stress. Increased circulation allows antibodies to travel throughout your bloodstream faster, making it easier for your immune system to fight off an illness. Exercise can also enhance your immune system by relieving stress and slowing the release of stress hormones in the body.

Giving Thanks!

Gratitude heals us inside and out!

In the spirit of this season I’d like to share a poem we read at our Thanksgiving table each year. The first time I read it was from a book of children’s poems I purchased while pregnant with my daughter, my first baby.  My kids usually tease me because I cry every year as I read it at the beginning of our dinner.  These words poignantly remind me of how fortunate I am in this life, for all things big and small. This year my daughter read it so I wouldn’t cry … at least not while reading 😉 I hope you enjoy it and it moves you as much as it does me.

First Thanksgiving Of All

Peace and Mercy and Jonathan,
And Patience (very small),
Stood by the table giving thanks
The first Thanksgiving of all.
There was very little for them to eat,
Nothing special and nothing sweet;
Only bread and a little broth,
And a bit of fruit (and no tablecloth):
But Peace and Mercy and Jonathan
And Patience, in a row,
Stood up and asked a blessing on
Thanksgiving long ago.
Thankful they were their ship had come
Safely across the sea;
Thankful they were for hearth and home,
And kin and company;
They were glad of broth to go with their bread,
Glad their apples were round and red,
Glad of mayflowers they would bring
Out of the woods again next spring.
So Peace and Mercy and Jonathan,
And Patience (very small),
Stood up gratefully giving thanks
The first Thanksgiving of all.
